David Burton is the Choral Director at Boise High School, the Artistic Director of the Boise Gay Men’s Chorus and the Chancel Choir Director at Boise First Congregational United Church of Christ. Prior to teaching at Boise High, he taught at Caldwell High School in Caldwell, ID and Sedway Middle School in Las Vegas, NV. David has earned the degrees of Associate of Fine Arts in Music Education and Associate of Arts in Music from Casper College and Bachelor of Music Education from Idaho State University. While a student at ISU, David had the opportunity to assist in conducting the Chamber Choir during a tour of Germany, Prague and Austria.
David is currently an active member of The American Choral Directors Association, The National Association for Music Education, and The Idaho Music Educators Association. He has served IMEA as the District III President & Vice President, District III Choral Chair and the 2014 & 2017 All-State Mixed Honor Choir Coordinator. David has directed the District V Treble Honor Choir and the District III SWIMS Honor Choir in addition to adjudicating several high school and junior high choral festivals. He served as the Idaho ACDA Ethnic and Multicultural Choir Chair and was a member of the National ACDA Teacher Advisory Panel. David was named the Teacher of the Year for both Caldwell High School and the Caldwell School District for the 2012-13 school year. He was named the District III Music Educator of the Year 2021. David was nominated and selected as one of twelve Choral Directors of Note in the January/February 2014 issue of Choral Director magazine. He was also a contributor to a three part series “Notes for Success: Advice for the First-Year Choral Teacher” published in the Choral Journal.
Choirs under David’s direction consistently receive superior ratings at local and national festivals and competitions. Boise High School choirs under his direction have performed for the IMEA All-State Inservice Conference, November 2016 and in Carnegie Hall, April 2016. The Boise Gay Men’s Chorus performed under his direction at the GALA Festival in Minneapolis, July 2024 and for the IDACDA Fall Conference, October 2024.
When he is not teaching, David enjoys working on remodeling and landscaping projects around his home, gardening, cooking, enjoying the beautiful mountains and outdoor spaces of South West Idaho and most importantly spending time with his husband and being a dad.
