    Sanctuary

As a model for conductors and choral teachers, Harvard University’s research on the Good Work Project defines good work across disciplines as both excellent in quality and socially responsible. Considering a wide range of repertoire examples for both treble and mixed voice choirs, Dr. Rao’s first session will focus on how repertoire in a wide range of styles and periods can provide the opportunity for artistry, cultural sensitivity, and social consciousness.

Headliner Session 2 | The Heart of Practice: Breathing, Movement and Vocalizations Preparing the Body, Mind, and Voice for Singing

This Zen-inspired approach to an integrated series of experiential practices was developed by Doreen Rao as a sequence of breathing meditation exercises, circular movement forms based on Tai Chi, and in-formed vocalizations that release a natural, healthy, and resonant tone quality in both developing and mature voices. The three-part sequence prepares the body, mind, and voice for singing in all vocal ranges and musical styles.

Headliner Session 3 | Pathways to Musical Engagement: From the Score to Rehearsal Planning and Choral Pedagogy

    Sanctuary

The correlation between the quality of the conductor’s musical preparation and the quality of the singer’s musical engagement is unquestionable. Developing a personal relationship from the “composer’s perspective” generates a pathway to the musical engagement of our singers. The conductor and choral teacher’s understanding of the music informs and motivates her ability to lead meaningful rehearsals and inspire the kind of musical engagement that keeps the singers coming back.

Headliner Session 4a | Conducting as Multidimensional Gesture: Listening, Teaching and Performing

    Sanctuary

Some of the greatest conductors I have known had little “conducting technique” or at best, dubious movements that seemed to pass as traditional “conducting.” And yet, their orchestras, choirs and audiences were rapt and enchanted by the music. So, what does this mean for us? How do we as conductors and choral teachers enrapture and enchant our singers and our audiences? How does conducting “technique” make a difference in how we teach and the way we communicate? What exactly is conducting? Dr. Rao will lead a practicum on three forms of gesture: As Listening, As Teaching, As Performing.
